Now 71 years old, Geoffrey Watts' interest in pre-Revolutionary Russian silver was first aroused some 35 years ago when his wife had her own antiques business. He spent much time in reference libraries and acquired considerable background knowledge. Many bibliographies referred him to Russian language books and so he learned Russian which opened a much broader source of knowledge of makers and assay masters together with the marks they used. It is the distillation of this information, collected over 35 years, that now forms the basis of this book.
